The V500 is designed for up to 6cm x 7cm (perhaps 9cm) film.

Eventually I want a more advanced scanner that can scan larger films, say up to and including 4x5'.

That sucks that Apple/Mac is messing with you. Environmentally lowimpact LEDs use no mercury, which is an element in CCFL. As I stated do not expect anything from Adobe for any pre-CC software like CS5 or CS6. You might check with Epson for new Drivers (I never have had too perhaps I should check anyway). I actually have an Epson Perfection V500 Photo Scanner, but in my case I'm using it on a Windows 10 system. There have been no updates to Ps CS5 or CS6 for many years, do not expect any either. In the interim there is a method in which you can still V500 scan in Mojave Turn on your V500 scanner and open System Preferences > Printers & Scanners > Scan > and select your Epson Perfection V500 from the menu on the left. Hopefully Apple-Adobe-Epson will soon figure out a fix/upgrade to allow us to use our faithful old V500-750 scanners within the Photoshop CS5/6 Import function! Oddly, Import does list my Epson XP-640 printer/scanner for scanning purposes.
